Stage Make-Up Project Reflection
Reflection
Throughout the course of this project, both Sahana and I have learned a great amount. In order to obtain this knowledge, we started out by conducting a little research on this project. We perused through websites, as well as Youtube to discover as much as we could about the very broad topic of stage make-up. Through our findings, we learned different types of faces one can apply for stage makeup: a basic look and fantasy look. While we watched tutorials online for assistance, for the most part we experimented and used our prior knowledge to create a look. We looked into what products were needed in order to complete each look and ordered them off of Amazon. When they arrived soon after, we experimented with what worked and what didn't. For the basic look, we discovered through the process of applying it how it differs from regular-day basic make-up. By comparing the same type of look but more different occasions, I came to understanding of how the amounts of makeup that is applied can affect the whole look. For example, going even slightly heavier on the eyeliner or darkening the eyelids slightly can make the look more smokey and bold which can transform the character you are trying to portray. Or going for a more pigmented lipstick can help say a lot about the person, For the fantasy look, we discovered a lot about the design selection, color scheme, color and skin-tone coordination, the size, the amount of glue and glitter that should be applied, and more. Sahana and I sue inspiration from previous looks done and decided on trying to do the make-up of a mermaid. A majority of this was improvised, though following a tutorial helped us a get a sense of what looks "fishy" or "scaly" to help design the face of a mermaid.
I don't think I have ever applied glitter on myself or someone else so it was fun using that for the first time. I enjoyed experimenting with it and having the opportunity to create my own design with it. I also learned how important details are and how one little thing can make a big difference and can transform the whole look. I also realized how much a make-up look can say about one's personality or character. I am pretty proud of our results. Going into it, I was aware that this project would not be easy, as it takes years of profession, learning, and practice to aquire the skills. In the real world, professional make-up artists are highly valued, for some of the biggest entertainment and arts platforms in the world only hire the best. It proves how important stage make-up is. It is something we don't think about but once its take away, we realize the difference it makes and where we would be without it. Beyond the theatre world, many people who are seen by a large amount of people use makeup. People on television, talk shows, interviews, weathermen, etc. Remembering this, I knew this would be a challenge for us.
I am glad we had the right materials and products so we could get the best results possible, considering our circumstances. I think we had practiced each look a few times on the face we could have mastered it a bit more. Maybe watching a variety of tutorials and videos could have helped us with our design but I do like what we came up with. Even though these are improvements that could have been made, I am satisfied with the work Sahana and I completed.
