Scene Work - Final Project Proposal
Proposal
what are you going to do and why? Be specific.
Why will this be a good final project and how will it both challenge you and showcase your skills and what you have learned this semester?
For this project, Sahana and I will be performing a scene entitled, "Pretty Girl/Plain Girl." It is a duet scene written by Lindsay Price from www.theatrefolk.com, written in a comedic style. Because of its length, we are going to perform the whole first page and the cut after the first line on the second page, "'I don't think you'll ever be ready for pageant girls.'" Sahana and I plan to post a sign-up sheet on the wall that the characters will use to set the scene. We plan on performing it right here in the classroom since we imagine them to be at school. I think this will be a good final project because it gives us a chance to collaborate while working as individuals at the same time. While this scene is meant for two actors, hence duet, by performing our own characters and deciding what we do personally will help us work on ourselves. Especially after covering many topics throughout each unit I think we can apply that knowledge and learning to our creation and performance of scene.
In terms of a challenge, I think this project will push us past our limits and help us step outside of our comfort zone and put ourselves others. If anything, we will gain confidence from performing this scene. While it is difficult to think about how we are going to portray these characters and say each line, it will only benefit us nevertheless. Throughout the course of this semester, I have gained knowledge on partnership, how to work with someone and collaborate on a project more. When we were practicing those improvisational skills at the beginning of this course I learned about how to keep the conversation going when your partner's character did not really have anything to say. Even though in a scene, the entire script is prepared, it makes me think about the improv. Whether it be improvised or a script, conversations always happen unplanned. The words are said spontaneously. In a way, it's more difficult to act out a script since you have to decide how that character would say it in that given moment, whereas if it was improvised, you would say the line naturally since it pops up in your brain on the spot.
